Are you ever coming home? I'll just sit at home I know it's all my fault But you can't seem to forgive me So I just feel bitter Such a fucking freezing winter
Five days feels so long Two years, wish it could be longer
Beat myself up In a small apartment All alone With people around me
Five days feels so long Two years, wish it could be longer
Self-inflicted Self abuse I guess I should listen better I got a new trick: it's called head up my ass |

| | Dead Kennedys-Stealing People's Mail | ] | Since this is the first issue of a magazine that is starting during all the new found off time I have while school is out which coincides with the ending of this past year, I thought a cliché “Best of” list would be highly appropriate. I pretty much compiled all the great things I listened too, read, and saw this year. New or old it’s all here. So here goes the list.
Top 10 Albums:
To be honest I didn’t have a lot of money to spend at the beginning at this year, but my new found employment now enables me to do just that. The only problem is picking out the exact albums to purchase, so here goes the list.
10. New Mexican Disaster Squad-Make Believe
Honestly, I was not sure about this band when I first decided to purchase their newest release. I just knew it was one of the few CD’s at my local small time record store had in it’s catalogue that I would actually consider buying and I felt compelled to help them out. Luckily I was not disappointed. These guys draw from the hardcore sounds of old, the ones not tainted by eyeliner or lame emo inspired lyrics. Plus they have audible lyrics which call for old school sing-a-longs. With Minor Threat speed, 7 Seconds melody, and angry politics. They are definitely the torch bearers of an old school revival.
9. Strike Anywhere-Dead FM
I got this CD way too late. I should have gotten it earlier, because this band has completely taken over my iTunes as of late. Not one mix this year did not include a song from these Richmond natives. Their melodic style of hardcore is tried and true and has seemed to engulf much of my musical taste this past year. With More songs about politics and personal politics with “Sedition” being the most personal and touching song on the entire album. Even if the album has more pop leanings it’s still a strong release and can’t wait to see more from these guys in the future.
8. Amon Amarth-With Oden on Our Side
Somehow metal won my heart over this past year. Everyone would probably argue with me and say the new Slayer album takes the cake this year, but Amon Amarth has always had a soft spot in my heart. This brand of Viking Black Metal manages to connect with me in an odd way. A way that makes me want to take back my heritage and become Norse so I can experience all that they are singing about. Pounding double bass and heavy riffs rip through an opus of songs. So burn some houses and pillage some Limey villages and have a ripping good time. I know I did to this album.
7. Gnarls Barkley-St. Elsewhere
When I first heard about this crazy collaboration I was kind of skeptical. Danger Mouse is hands down amazing, but Cee-Lo? Plus the first single got major attention and airplay, which is understandable. But did the album live up to the hype? Yes. With that familiar Danger Mouse sound he has so perfectly defined as his own and Cee-Lo’s great vocals the album is quite a musical journey. More projects from these two in the future would be much appreciated.
6. Defiance, Ohio- The Great Depression
I’ll admit it, I downloaded this album for free, but from them directly. Following in the foot steps of other great folk punk acts like Against Me! and This Bike is a Pipe Bomb. They bring even more instruments to the table with even better shared vocals between several of the members of the band. Making their CD completely free makes them even cooler to a poor kid with a nice internet connection.
5. Cursive-Happy Hollow
Like many Cursive fans we were all on pins and needles wondering what Mr. Kasher could pull off after Greta left the band and they lost a major part of the last album. To be honest the cello is what attracted me to Cursive in the first place, obviously they didn’t always have it and won’t, so I was hoping for something even more over the top. Enter the brass. The addition of a horn section made me rather excited and made the wait worth it. Tim Kasher has yet again managed to create an epic masterpiece, but what makes this release even better is him shying away from his previously heartbroken past to focus his anger on a another subject, religion. Call it punk rock, call it ridiculous, I’ll just call it amazing from start to finish.
4. Good Clean Fun-Between Christian Rock and a Hard Place
I finally discovered good posi or maybe it was good all along? That’s a puzzling question, but these guys have sparked my interest in the posi-hardcore scene and I am greatly intrigued. I think it’s their sense of humor that wins me over, being able to joke around and yet still be proud of your personal choices. Striking commentary on my personal worst enemies, Christian bands and poking fun on the slightly ridiculous punk scene. Each song is a fun time with a good sing-a-long and a rather “positive” vibe. Now if I could only go see these guys. Also don’t hate me for that terrible pun.
3. The Falcon-Unicornography
This LP from the Chicago super group was worth the weight. The EP was so exceptionally good that news of a full length brought even more hopes of great joy and oh boy, was their joy. Brendan Kelly just goes to show how amazing of a song writer he is minus Chris and despite my liking for Chris more, Brendan shines through in the Falcon. Two songs from the EP are found on this release, which does not include my favorite song from that EP, but that’s ok. The new songs are equally up to par with the EP songs, thankfully. There are several eclectic sounds throughout the album, including a little ska ditty. So there’s something here for everyone.
2. NOFX-Wolves In Wolves’ Clothing
This was perhaps a no-brainer. Even Though not as good as The War on Errorism, based on constancy. The songs aren’t bad, but they don’t flow as nice. There is plenty of variation in songs, much like Punk in Drublic and for some reason that doesn’t sit that well with me. Similar to Errorism is the main theme of politics that was not welcome by many of their fans when that CD came out. Honestly I enjoy Fat Mike’s rants and if I think some are dumb, I don’t really care because the man can still write a damn good catchy song. Here’s to another 20 years of quality punk rock from these veterans.
1. Jason Choi and the Sea-Leave the Night Behind/The Lawrence Arms-Oh! Calcutta!
That’s right, the number one spot is a tie. Both of these CD’s were in constant rotation. I couldn’t honestly pick between Jason and Chris/Brendan. They are all song writers I look up too and respect.
Jason had a really good year. Not only did he help Matt pass Algebra, but he finally released his long awaited full length debut. Anyone that has been around the local scene knows that this album is 3 years in the making and it was well worth it. Many of these songs are all known by heart by several kids and adults out there in the Melbourne music scene. He really outdid himself and I can’t wait for more material from him in the future.
Orgcore is what many people call the Lawrence Arms, but despite all the fan boy activity at Punknews.org they still can polarize me greatly. After discovering them not too long ago from a Take Action! Compilation they have easily become one of my all-time favorite bands. With Oh! Calcutta! they manage to bring forth a new form of songwriting. One that involves both Chris and Brendan to work together to write great songs. They also share vocals, which was unheard of throughout their earlier recordings. As someone used to the segregated songs it wasn’t that welcoming of a idea, since I have always favored Chris’ songs. Thankfully the new direction worked and it worked well. More heartfelt songs of loneliness and abolishing regret can never get old in my book and all the hype is well deserved. Commence brown nosing: Congratulations Brendan Kelly for making my top 10 list twice this year. End brown Nosing.
Honorable Mentions:
When I started compiling this list I thought it could use more variety, but I did manage to forget some other great releases from the skacore masters Folly and their Connecticut counter-parts the Flaming Tsunamis. Also another great local act, Will Farina released a great album on his own that deserves much praise. And too any other bands that I forgot, I am deeply sorry. |

| | Jason Choi and the Sea-...And Boy are My Arms Tired | ] | Wow, it's been awhile (no not Staind).
Well, I have a job now.
Hit me up at Jason's Deli.
6 months with Caitlin on Thursday.
Her birthday is Friday.
Also tonight I came to an epiphany(again, not Staind).
I want to start a zine.
I mean a real one with real articles, interviews, and cd reviews full of biased opinons.
I already have a bunch of ideas.
Those include: -A metal section by Matt -CDs to accompany the literature with music handpicked by me and anyone else that wants to write for my magazine. -Local music updates and local artist interviews. -Maybe even original artwork from local artists?
The brain is working overtime and I need some ideas.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

Unless your Kurt Cobain.
Burn.
Seriously though, I need a job one can only be punk rock for so long.

| | Pulley-Good Guys Don't Wear White | ] | So, some of you might be wondering, where has Timmy been? Well the answer to that question is back and forth from the hospital. Yes, Caitlin was admitted to the hospital Friday night for a terrible infection in her pinky. So I've spend the last two days sitting with her and keeping her company. She really wants to leave, but they won't let her and she might end up staying there tonight. They still haven't gotten her results back either, so what exactly caused the infection is still unknown. Hopefully we'll find out today.
For now I am home, I spent the night with her last night and I wanted to come home and take a shower, check on the fridge, and possibly go see Matt and see how his foot is going.
So yeah, that's been pretty much this whole weekend.
Edit: I have been informed that Lauren Etheridge's father passed away last night, so everyone keep her in your thoughts as well.

| Great Lakes/Great Escapes |
[Aug. 4th, 2006|11:41 am] |
So last night was the concert, it was fun and that crowded, which was actually kind of comforting. No sweaty bodies up agaisnt you, everyone was chill and enjoyed the music. I did get rather excited when we walked outside the Virgin Megastore and saw Brendan Fucking Kelly and Chris Motherfucking McCaughan walking right in front of us. Caitlin said she was ready to hold me back from pouncing on them. Man, I'm gay.
So anyway the show started and this local band named Ted opened. They were good, but kind of generic. After them A Wilhelm Scream got on and kicked the audiences ass. Those guys really know how to bring it and I really need to get one of their CDs and see them again to get the full experience.
After them was the moment I have been waiting for, the Lawrence Arms! I think I got my hopes up, because I was kind of dissapointed when they played most of "Oh! Calcutta", but they still put on a great set. I do believe I remembered most of it: "Devils Takin' Names"(Opener) "Lose Your Illusion" "First Eviction Notice" "On With the Show" "Recovering the Opposable Thumb" "Keys to the City" "Porno and Snuff Films" "A Toast" "Great Lakes/Great Escapes" "100 Resolutions" "Necrotism" "Record Player"(Closer)
Around 10, Lagwagon took the stage, the band most of the people there came to see. I was actually excited to see them as well, they opened two songs from the newer record. Then went right into some classics "Before You My Friend", "Sick", "Sleep", "Gun in Your Hand", "May 16th", "Mr.Coffee", "Know it All", and then played a slightly serious song to remember their former member who took his life. That was the encore and then to end the night they played an inspired version of "Razor Burn".
All in all it was a fun night that, plus I didn't break a sweat once during it. Yay!
-Always upping the punx, Timmy
P.S. Here's to another month and many more with Caitlin!!!
P.S.S. Oh how I love her so. |
